AirAsia has been named the World’s Best Low Cost Airline for the tenth year in a row at the 2018 Skytrax World Airline Awards. The awards were held at The Langham hotel in London on the 17th of July and Never Ending Traveller were invited by Air Asia to attend the announcement at their headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
Every year Skytrax conducts research for commercial airlines with surveys based from more than 20 million travellers. Passengers are able to give insights with positive and negative opinions about an airline with the awards known as the ‘Oscars of the Aviation Industry’.
In anticipation for the Special Announcement, Never Ending Traveller and other media guests gathered at the Tune Hotel Bar for a refreshing beer. Catered by the hotel, we were offered various canapes and mojito mocktails before indulging in a selection of pastas, meats and cakes.
Watching AirAsia’s Facebook Live Streaming of the event in London, the special announcement was finally revealed. The winner of Skytrax World Airlines Award – Low Cost Carrier is AirAsia. This was the 10th year in a row that they had won this award so it is a special number and amazing achievement. Cheers and applause filled the room and live feed, showing celebrations from locations including AirAsia’s RedQ.
AirAsia co-founder, Executive Chairman of AirAsia Group and Group CEO of AirAsia X, Datuk Kamarudin Meranun accepted the award in London. “I’m honored to celebrate our record-breaking tenth win today with our Allstars who have been with us on this journey since the early days. This moment feels surreal. I remember the ecstatic feeling of being named the world’s best low-cost airline for the very first time ten years ago. I would have never imagined we would remain the world’s best for a decade. Thank you for your tremendous love and support. We will continue to champion low fares and hopefully transform many more lives in the process.”
Shortly after the announcement, the founding team of CEOs and GCEO’s entered the room, grinning ear to ear. The Group CEO of AirAsia and Founder of Tune Group, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes addressed the numerous media from all over the world where he spoke about the history and origin of AirAsia.
Co-Founded by Tony Fernandes, he purchased the struggling airlinein 2001 for 1 ringgit, and has transformed AirAsia into an industry player. Winning the award for 10 years straight shows how well respected in the industry both Tony and the airline are. His humbling speech was extremely inspiring and it was refreshing to see someone in such a high position be completely down to earn and relaxed.
After his speech, Never Ending Traveller was offered the opportunity to speak with Mr Fernandes. We wanted to find out what sets AirAsia apart from other low cost carriers in Australia and what are the future plans for AirAsia to stay ahead.
“AirAsia has made their mark and continues to provide high quality, friendly service at low costs by exploring options that may be difficult. For example within Australia by moving the hub to Avalon Airport in Melbourne it also allows us to to continue at a low cost. We also are continuing to develop technology in improving the experience for all passengers. For example, wifi on board and using facial recognition for checking in.”
Mr Fernandes continued to answer questions from other international media (Japan, Thailand, Philippines, Australia, China and Malaysia), including what the future holds internationally for the airline. “There are plans for new and exciting destinations and at a higher frequency. But with new ventures, it also means new difficulties and the team is no stranger to this, as their toughest time is facing the unknown. Improving technology, not just for the customer experience but also for safety means the team will be able to accommodate customers appropriately.”
Never Ending Traveller would like to congratulate AirAsia on an amazing achievement and are sure that this won’t be the last time winning this award.
