If you’re on a tight budget, you’ll start eating instant noodles for breakfast, lunch and dinner. When you’re craving a late night feed, you’ll reach for instant noodles. Too hungry to wait? You’ll cook instant noodles. It is one of the most versatile meals that can be eaten plain and simple, or upgraded with all sorts of flavours and garnishes.
This is exactly what Momofuku Ando did starting in 1958. It took him a year of non-stop hard work with much trial and error before perfecting the first chicken ramen in his shed. What made his instant ramen become a global sensation though was his cup noodle invention in 1971. My favourite is his space noodles! It’s a truly out of the world invention right there.
Traces of Momofuku Ando
Everyone can explore the full story of Momofuku Ando’s instant noodle history at the Cupnoodle Museum in Osaka Ikeda. The journey starts by walking under 800 products through the Instant Noodles Tunnel. It shows all the rare and limited flavours along with different lines that have been created since the very first creation. Opposite is an interactive story wall for you to explore and uncover the story of Momofuku Ando and his quest to perfect the instant noodle. The story uses various gadgets like handles to reveal rare objects and photos from each period including the actual vacuum pack of Space Ramen.
They have also included a recreation of the shed from where it all began. It’s not filled with special equipment or tools, just the things he needed to make the first chicken ramen. To learn about the current method, step into a cup noodle and watch the short clip played in the Cupnoodles Drama Theatre.
Make your own Instant Cup Noodle
Now you can create your own in the Cupnoodle factory. When I say your own, I mean it. Starting with designing your own label and then choosing what flavours and garnishes you want to add. At first I struggled with coming up with a label but with the exhibition of Instant Noodles, I was quickly filled with all sorts of ideas. You can check out what my end product was with in the video of my experience at the factory.
Another amazing experience is actually making the noodles itself in the Chicken Ramen Factory. You’ll knead, spread, steam and flash fry the noodles so you can take home and enjoy your own creation. Make sure you book into a class prior to visiting otherwise you might miss your chance. There’s also a tasting room where you can eat exclusive and limited flavours if you get hungry from being surrounded by all these cup noodles.
